A multi-talented artist, Guy Manning is accomplished in oil, gouche and watercolor. Well-grounded in the classics, he is a master in pastels. Like Degas, Guy carries the drama of pastel techniques into his oils.
Guy grew up in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania. In early childhood he demonstrated artistic ability. During the summertime visits to the shore, he would rise early and do watercolor paintings from life of the horsedrawn fishing dories as they put out to sea. At the age of seven he attended the Cheltenham Art Center where his hero’s were the illustrators of the 1940’s. His work was exhibited at the Art Alliance in Philadelphia when he was just 12 years old and he also exhibited at the Pen and Brush Club in Philadelphia as a teenager. He graduated from high school with honors and was awarded a four-year scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
Although Guy’s family encouraged him to go into commercial art, as it seemed to have a more secure future than that of fine art, he never lost his love of painting, working with pastels and doing portrait work. He worked for advertising agencies in Philadelphia and New York before he joined the service, but does not consider that a significant time in his career.
