Landscapes Paintings By John Cogan
John Cogan did not formally study art in school, but concentrated instead on math and science. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Rice University and worked for an oil company. His first love was always painting, so in 1982 he left his position as a geophysicist to pursue art full time. "I probably look at things from a different point of view," says the scientist-turned-artist. "Understanding the physical properties of a landscape and how the elements affect it enables me to portray it more realistically. If I had studied art instead of physics, I would have become a very different artist.
